Scotch is now 'Made in Scotland' only

India has granted 'geographical indication of origin' (GI) status to 'Scotch Whisky', a legal protection that formally recognises that as a product 'Scotch Whiskey' can only be made in Scotland. The grant of status will allow spirits produced in Scotland only to use the appellation 'Scotch Whisky' in their labels.


India is among the top ten export markets by volume for Scotch Whiskey. In 2010, 40.1 million bottles (700 ml) of Scotch Whiskey were exported to India, an increase of 40 per cent from 2009.

Tata DOCOMO - 1st Indian brand to run Twitter Ads

Interface Business Solutions announced that Tata DOCOMO is the first brand in India to start advertising on Twitter.


Interface Business Solutions, the digital agency of Tata DOCOMO credited with making Twitter advertising in India a reality, is now engaged with the folks at Twitter to offer Twitter Advertising to its existing and potential clients.

Amul notched into top 100 Asian brands

Amul, owned and marketed by Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), has beaten all other Indian brands to notch the 89th position in a ‘Top 1000 Brands of Asia’ survey conducted by Campaign magazine. It is the third year in a row where Amul has featured in the top 100 of the 1,000 Asian brands covered under the survey.

However, Amul’s overall rank has slipped from 73 last year. It had improved its rank in 2010 over 2009 when it had ranked No. 83 in the survey. Nonetheless, it has retained its number one rank among all Indian brands in the list.

Cholayil acquires Krishna Thulasi (herbal brand)

Cholayil Private Limited (CPL), a Chennai-based Rs 100-crore FMCG company, announced the acquisition of Krishna Thulasi, a leading herbal soap brand owned by Krishna Herbals based in Kollam.


CPL had acquired one of Kerala's oldest brands of talcum powder and soap, Cuticura, in 2001, which now has 15 per cent market share in the Kerala market. The company has also planned to launch a number of beauty and cosmetic products like hair cream and face cream shortly. It will also launch a low-price soap brand, My Sop, for markets like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. 

With a turnover of Rs 5 crore, Krishna Thulasi is one of south India's admired brands of herbal soap and other personal care products like herbal shampoo and face beauty gel.
