Animal Logos & Trivia - Series 3

Taking forward the series from leaping cat, this time we'll take bird which has been used in logos. The two famous brands which strike immediately are Dove and Twitter.

Dove

Dove is a personal care brand owned by Unilever. It was introduced in the 1950s for the purpose of serving military personnel. At that time, the Navy needed a soap to protect their skins from drying due to over exposure to the rough sea water or sand.

When the soap became popular, in 1957 the company decided for a commercial launch and hence it got the brand name “dove”.

Trivia:-
The dove bird in the logo stands for peace. It honors the sacrifice of those military personnel for whom it was originally manufactured. In other sense it also puts the mild nature of the various Dove products. Its color changes with time.

Twitter

Twitter's origins lie in a "daylong brainstorming session" of the podcasting company Odeo. During the meeting, Jack Dorsey introduced the idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group, a concept partially inspired by the SMS group messaging service TXTMob.

The original project code name for the service was twttr, inspired by Flickr and the five character length of American SMS short codes. The developers initially considered "10958″ as a short code, but later changed it to "40404″ for "ease of use and memorability."

Dorsey published the first Twitter message : "just setting up my twttr"

The story of the twitter bird began when Twitter discovered an illustration of a bird by a British illustrator, Simon Oxley on iStockphoto. Twitter paid $7 for the rights of that illustration and used the bird since then to decorate their website.

Trivia:-
The name of the blue twitter bird is Ollie. It is the official mascot of the Twitterrific Twitter application For Mac OS and iPhone. Though the bird is not twitter’s official logo.

Wal-Mart wants to peek into your pants

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is putting electronic identification tags on men's clothing like jeans starting Aug. 1 as the world's largest retailer tries to gain more control of its inventory. But the move is raising eyebrows among privacy experts.

The individual garments, which also includes underwear and socks, will have removable smart tags that can be read from a distance by Wal-Mart workers with scanners. In seconds, the worker will be able to know what sizes are missing and will also be able tell what it has on hand in the stock room. Such instant knowledge will allow store clerks to have the right sizes on hand when shoppers need them.

The tags work by reflecting a weak radio signal to identify the product. They have long spurred privacy fears as well as visions of stores being able to scan an entire shopping cart of items at one time.
