Downturn hits porn industry

Recently found a very interesting link, see what could happened during recession time.

At the Adult Entertainment Expo, the annual confab that runs concurrently with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, there were fewer exhibitors, fewer fans and a lot less glitz.

According to a rep for Adult Video News, which runs the show, the exhibitor count was down about 18% from last year. Attendance by fans -- who are admitted on some days of the show, with the rest open to industry pros only -- wasn’t set to be tallied until after the event was finished, but is likely down as well.

Company History 4: Coca - Cola

History
It all began in 1886 when John Pemberton, a pharmacist from the city of Atlanta, created a drink that would become one of the greatest symbols of corporate world. This Creation of Pemberton was very much motivated by a sense of curiosity. The pharmacist used to experiment his medical formulas to find a cure for a headache. One day he mixed his syrup with soda and offered it to his customers, who consider it as a very special drink. Soon the product was a put for sale for $ 0.05. Frank Robinson, Pemberton accountant, coined the term Coca-Cola, writing the name with his own calligraphy.
The official date of birth of the product was on May 8, 1886. In the early years were sold approximately 9 cups (237 ml) per day. Unfortunately, Pemberton was more an inventor than a businessman. Without having the slightest idea that his invention would be a worldwide success, in 1891 he sold the company to Asa Griggs Candler, for approximately $ 2,300.00. Candler became the first president of the company and the first to give visibility to the real business and brand. Asa Candler, a born salesman, made the Coca-Cola a simple invention into a big business. And found creative ways to present the brightest new drink: distributed coupons to encourage people to try the product and the pharmaceutical supplied with clocks, scales and calendars with the Coca-Cola.

By 1895, Candler had built factories in the cities of Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles. The popularity of the condenser required new forms of presentations that allowed more people to enjoy it. In 1894, Joseph B. Whitehead, put the drinks in a bottle and gave Candler, it was not very enthusiastic about the news. Despite being a businessman innovative and brilliant, could not imagine at the time that the secret of the success of Coca-Cola would be in portable bottles that consumers can take anywhere. So five years later in 1899, for just $ 1, he sold the exclusive rights to bottle and sells the drink to lawyers Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead.

Coke Sued Over VitaminWater Claims

The Washington-based Center for Science in the Public Interest accuses Coke of selling what it says is basically sugar water by claiming it has vitamins that boost immunity and reduce the risk of disease.
The group said the health benefit claims that Coca-Cola makes about its VitaminWater are "nonsense." It filed a class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California.

Who own VitaminWater in the past?
The world's leading beverages company Coca-Cola had acquired it from Glaceau also known as Energy Brands Inc for $4.1 billion in year 2007. Our very own Tata Tea used to own 30-per cent stake in Glaceau.

Mint-O-Fresh ka ‘Jiggi-jikka’

Continuing with their Laila Majnu theme latest ad of ITC’s Minto Fresh is an attempt to reinterpret the style of village romance with the urban rural dynamic.

Shot on location in Hampi, Karnataka, the ad opens on the local thakur-ka-beta arriving with his associates, carrying with them lots of gifts. But our Laila is not much impressed with all this drama.
Then enter Mr. Majnu, having a halo around his head – and above all a Minto Fresh in his hand. He pops it, breathes out, and a magical stream of freshness towards Laila. Who takes one deep breath – and launches herself towards Majnu, sending the thakur, his men and all the gifts flying in a slow motion into the air. As he drives him off in his (again gaudily painted) scooter, the Hindi cinema takeoff story is complete...

Google also goes green

Few days back I reported about IBM’s Project Big Green, which was energy efficient and cost saving solutions to manage data center. Now how can Google left behind on such projects, they have also designed and built the most energy efficient data centers in the world.

Most of our work is focused on saving resources such as electricity and water and, more often than not, we find that these actions lead to reduced operating costs. Being "green" is essential to keeping our business competitive. It is this economic advantage that makes our efforts truly sustainable.

A Message from an unknown Satyamite

Dear all of my Satyamites,

Yesterday will be a memorable day to us throughout our life. Little bit of business & human nature knowledge is forcing me to write few of my thoughts (Please ignore them if they doesn’t make any sense). Ask yourself who is worst affected by all this mayhem. Is it u & me (employees), Govt or Satyam & Ramalingaraju ?. My conviction says that employees of any MNC are associated to that company as long as they don’t have any better option, the best thing government can do for a company is to keep itself away from it. But there was a visionary who created wealth for a nation for 20 years, the only thing that cannot be separated from Satyam for these 20 years & ahead also if Satyam remains was\is a name called “Ramalinga Raju”. Fortunately I got some 15 min of time talking to him when i was an ELTP. He’s much softer than we see him. Imagine what would be going on in his mind when he was writing yesterday’s letter accepting all the things which he did only to save his company. All have made him scapegoat for what has happened & left the company keeping their integrity intact. He was cursed badly for putting the money of a public limited company into his family driven company but it only now clear that how he was transferrring the risk from 50,000 people to his two sons & his known-integrity.

The worst which can happen to we the employees is that we are out of our current job, jobless for time being & then again getting a job which we deserve & our families will be worried for us(as they are always). But a relatively bitter truth will be for the Raju-family who will be annoyed for ages & will be treated as miscreants by those who do not know the truth or more about Greedy investors & money market. And the truth is that he has not stolen some thousand crores rupees into his own pocket, it was a bubble he created which busted. (And every other company on earth does so, being wary of not getting trapped)

One more thing which annoys me is does a philanthropist guy deserve this disgraceful exit ? I really feel sad about the way he’s been portrait in the media. Our rustic fellows have already started comparing him with Harshad Mehta. Tell me any incident in corporate India where any chairman has dared to confess such irregularities in his own firm. And believe me it takes hell lot of guts to accept all this publicly. And as I read the news today morning it was published there that even his community members have suggested him not to tell anything and later on he can play with the Indian laws as every politician does in India. But as he mentioned it was all deep regret in his conscience which lead him to confess all this.

I am not at all saying that he’s totally innocent and unaware of what’s been going there but a person who has started a journey called Satyam 20 yrs ago with few associates and made it 4th largest IT Company in India, done all this for sake of his 50000 Satyam family members. In the end i’ll ask only one question to all of my friends,” for whom he has created this bubble, if it was he who was going bankrupt? ”
Satyam will get back up from all of those

80,000 families who got benefited in past 20 years.

from all 30 villeges under By Raju foundation.

From 1/2 million homeless children who are in Satyam foundation camp and under care indirectly.

From all under developed nations where Satyam Foundation has worked enormously shoulder to shoulder with local NGOs.

On 15 march, 2008, the Reserve Bank of India has withdrawn the blanket ban imposed on the international audit and consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) from auditing banks and non-banking finance institutions.

Also, in Japan Chup Aoyama PricewaterhouseCoopers was banned by the country’s regulator. Then, PwC floated a new company called Arata to take up audit assignments with new partners. INDIA’S BIGGEST CORPORATE FRAUD

Chairman of Satyam Computer Ramalinga Raju has resigned from the company’s board. In a shocking disclosure, he has revealed some financial irregularities in the company, including an inflated cash balance of Rs 5,040 crore.

WTF it’s all about?
The beleaguered IT giant, already under scanner over the aborted acquisition of firms promoted by the Chairman's family, received a rude shock days ahead of its January 10 board meeting, with Raju stepping down along with his brother and Managing Director B Rama Raju.

Share movement as on Jan-7-09

BACKGROUND

The Satyam board on December 16 passed an unanimous resolution to let Satyam buy Maytas Infra and Maytas Properties for $1.6 billion. However the deal was called off in the wake of an outrage from the company’s shareholders as well as the institutional investors. The quick change in plans came after investors demonstrated their opposition to the deals by pushing shares in India's No. 4 software services company down 55 per cent in New York Stock Exchange trade. Satyam founder and Chairman B Ramalinga Raju and other insiders hold 36 per cent in Maytas Infra and 35 per cent in Maytas Properties.

WHO IS MR. RAJU?

Born to Byrraju Satyanarayana Raju, a farmer in Gargaparru village of West Godavari district, Ramalinga Raju attended school in Bheemavaram town and graduated in commerce from Loyola College, Vijaywada, before landing in the United States to complete his MBA from Ohio University. In 1977 Raju married Nandini, the eldest daughter of an electrical engineer based in Germany. His first business venture was Satyam Spinning and Weaving Mills Limited, set up in Shabashpally in his home district. Raju had to wind up the mill after it turned sick in a few years, but by then the idea of diversifying into other sectors had germinated in his mind. The spinning and weaving mill was followed by a construction company, Satyam Constructions. Raju also set up a software unit in his spinning mill, which became the laboratory where Raju tested his ideas for the future. It was as early as 1987 when Raju foresaw the tremendous new opportunities in then little-known world of software. Along with his brother-in-law DVS Raju, Ramalinga Raju launched Satyam Computer. However, differences over matters of management and funding led to the parting of ways with DVS Raju. Ramalinga Raju made his younger brother Ram Raju his second in command, while DVS Raju went on to launch his own company, VisualSoft, in the high technology area.

WHO ARE THE AUDITORS? -PWC
In India they audit around 118 compaines, including few big names like:
GlaxoSmith, GMR Inds, GMR Infra, Goodyear India, HCL Technologies, Jagran Prakashan, Marico, Maruti Suzuki, Mastek, Moser Baer (I), NDTV, NIIT, T.V. Today, United Breweries, and Zensar Technologies.
In the past they were named for fraudulent accounting in Global Trust Bank and DSQ Software . Despite these achievements, the alleged figure fudger was named "India Tax Firm of the Year" in 2007!
In the GTB case, Pricewaterhouse was hauled up for alleged negligence in auditing of books of the bank and failing to detect huge levels of NPAs. The NPAs had accumulated due to massive exposure made by the erstwhile bank into the stock market, which Pricewaterhouse is alleged to have overlooked. In DSQ Software, they were found guilty of manipulating share prices and falsification of accounts by Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) of the ministry of corporate affairs.

However just two days before they had suggested to get out of the mess which they could not trace for so many years.
“PwC may review its 'continuance' with Satyam Computer ( as on 5 Jan 2009)”
Now it will be interesting to see how corporates and government will rate them for this crime

Trivia: Satyam in Sanskrit means ‘truth’ and maytas is satyam in reverse, truly a reverse....

Teja Raju and Rama Raju Jr., Myatas (in)fame
From next year onwards, in all likelihood the course curriculum on corporate governance would consist this as their case study....
